Dairy Promotion Programs

Commodity “checkoff programs” were created for producers to voluntarily promote and provide research and information to consumers. This promotion is through generic, producer-funded, advertising in an attempt to promote the overall demand for cooperative agricultural commodities. Checkoff programs vary by commodity but are mandated through federal and state regulations and commodity-specific administrative policies. This heading covers the federal and state dairy checkoff regulations, programs, and organizations.

Federal Checkoff Program

This following heading explores the federal checkoff program for dairy promotion, including the statutory and regulatory context dating back to 1937, and national dairy checkoff programs and organizations.

State Checkoff Program

State United Dairy Industry Association (UDIA) member research and promotion programs, and other state dairy check-off programs and dairy councils are linked below. Agricultural Marketing Service has also listed out state and regional checkoff programs in the regularly updated, 2019 Directory of Qualified State, Regional or Importer Dairy Product Promotion, Research or Nutrition Education Programs.
